Zaton dates back to the 15th century. The settlement is located in a small bay with the same name, at the most western part of the Šibenik bay in which the river Krka flows. Old necropolises from the period between IV. and I. century B.C. were discovered in Velika Mrdakovica next to Zaton, and on the ruin of the town of Velika Mrdakovica itself, remnants of an old settlement and fortification system were discovered. An asphalted road connects the place with Šibenik, which is 10 kilometres away. The place is harmonious, with both old and new houses. Lying behind the settlement are fertile fields, on which most of all marasca cherry and wine grape are grown.
The inhabitants are engaged in sheep-farming and fishing and lately also with tourism and trade. In Zaton, there is a pier, a boathouse and a rowing track, which was made for the Mediterranean Games. The track is especially suitable for international and national rowing competitions, and due to good weather conditions, many national teams prepare here during wintertime.
Zaton is a pleasant place, both to stay and for day-trip tourism. Guests are accommodated in family houses and can eat in restaurants and taverns. |
