The

In terms of geographical position
the Riviera is a complex whole,
and in terms of relief, climate,
vegetation, demography, social,
cultural and economic characteristics
it can be divided into offshore islands, tramontane
region and coastal area with the town of Šibenik as
an economic, cultural and administrative centre of
the Riviera.
Indented coast with many coves and small
ports and with more than 240 islands, islets and oversee
reefs of which those of Kornati ca be singled out for
its number and beauty. Only the islands of Prvić, Zlarin,
Kaprije, Žirije, Krapanj and Murter are permanently
inhabited.
The town of Šibenik with its 42.000 inhabitants
is a centre of the county and it stands out with its
unique position on the slopes of hills on the northern
side of the picturesque and wide bay on the mouth of
river Krka, which is connected with the sea by the Sv.
Ante Strait.
Croats founded Šibenik more than 1000 years
ago; hence it is the oldest autochthonous Croatian
town on the eastern coast of the Adriatic.
National
Parks of the Šibenik Riviera , NP Krka and NP Kornati make
it a very attractive tourist destination. Due to the indentedness
of the coast, especially in the National Park Krka nautical
tourism developed very much. Now, there are 9 marinas on
the Riviera . |
