B.C.
first Greek colonies were founded on islands in the Adriatic  
around 100
B.C.
Romans rule over the eastern coast of the Adriatic.
305. Roman emperor Diocletian governs in present-day town of Split.  
around 600. Croats move to present-day Croatia.  
925. There is a mention of the first Croatian king, Tomislav, who united Pannonian and Dalmatian Croatia.  
1102. After the death of Petar Svačić, the last Croatian king, Croatia enters into a personal union with Hungary.  
1242. King Bela IV issues the Golden Bull making Zagreb a Royal Borough.  
1699. Croatia is freed from Turkish government; continental Croatia remains under the Habsburg rule, the greatest part of the coast and islands is under Venetian rule; only Republic of Dubrovnik keeps its independency.  
1815. After a short period of French rule, almost the entire territory of what is today Croatia enters into Habsburg monarchy.  
1847. Croatian becomes the official language of Croatia, instead of Latin.  
1848. Vice-Roy Josip Jelačić defends Croatia from Hungarian attempts of occupation and unites all Croatian regions.  
1918. After the breakup of Austria-Hungary during the First World War, Croatia enters into the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, which later becomes Yugoslavia.  
1941. German and Italian troops occupy the then Yugoslavia. The organized partisan resistance begins, which in Yugoslavia was lead by Croatian anti-fascists.  
1945. People’s Republic of Yugoslavia was declared and present-day Croatia became its federative state.  
1990. First multiparty elections after the Second World War are held. The Parliament elects Franjo Tuđman Ph. D. to be the first president.  
1991.

Croatia declared its independency; the beginning of Serbian rebellion, backed by Yogoslavian People’s Army and Serbia, resulting in the occupation of one third of the territory of Croatia.

 
1992. Republic of Croatia becomes a member of United Nations.  
1998. The last occupied part of Croatia, including Vukovar, was again put under Croatian government.  
1999. The first Croatian president Franjo Tuđman Ph.D. died.  
2000. Elections were held; the coalition of 6 parties won.  
2003. Elections were held; Croatian Democratic Union won.
